yeah and I certainly agreed with some of the sentiments. scifi's ability to imaginatively simulate philosophical analogies may be it's greatest feature. star trek is fun if maybe too escapist, but once you get into 2001 and solaris territory, you get real serious. in fact, if I made films I would be very attracted to not only doing scifi to explore theoretical situations but also to combine it with other modes, like the urban drama, or some sort of pseudodocumentary - albeit with more of an ironic stance. those sorts of neogenres would be so avant dude if you did it right.
